Sunday, 12th of October
On the 12th of October a part of the team went to Cacao for visiting this beautiful village
and its Sunday market.
The village of Cacao is located on the Comté river South of Cayenne. Its population
mainly consists of Hmong farmers, refugees from Laos who were resettled in French
Guiana in 1977. These families have built a strong community in Cacao, turning a
difficult environment into a successful example of integration through agriculture and
solidarity. The Hmong maintain their traditions while contributing to the local economy
via farming and tourism.
On Sundays the village receives many visitors, even in spite of the long drive from
places like Kourou (about two hours), attracted by the variety of local and Asian goods,
including fruits, vegetables, spices and food (like pho soup and banana fritters). It’s also
a great place to connect with locals and experience the region’s vibrant atmosphere.

For lunch, we enjoyed the local food at the restaurant Bellevue, with stunning views over
the jungle.
